Should We All Be Drinking Hydrogen-Infused Water?

Oh yay. Another health fad. “Hydrogen-infused water”? Sounds like something a corporate executive thought up while high at Burning Man, right? Actually, it’s a real thing–and could be beneficial to your health. Scientists have been studying the benefits of hydrogen-infused water for about a decade now, and the result  are intriguing.

Hydrogen Water Decreases Oxidative Stress

A 2010 study published in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition in Japan demonstrated the beneficial effect of hydrogen-infused water on human subjects who suffer from potential metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is in many ways related to diabetes: patients have extremely high blood sugar levels and high cholesterol and it is closely linked to obesity and lack of exercise. Over 8 weeks, patients were instructed to drink 1.5 to 2 liters of  hydrogen-rich water daily. This resulted in resulted in a 39% increase in the antioxidant enzyme called superoxide dismutase, and a 47% decrease in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS).  In layman’s terms, this means that the enzyme which helps break down potentially harmful oxygen molecules in cells INCREASED. And a substance which  is MORE prevalent when there is oxidative stress DECREASED. Fascinating. In addition, the study subjects were found to have a significant increase in the “good” cholesterol, and a decrease in the “bad’ cholesterol.

Hydrogen Water Prevents Cognitive Decline

Another 2010 study published in the same journal demonstrated the beneficial effect of hydrogen-infused water on cognitive impairment in mice.  The mice administered the hydrogen-infused water demonstrated less age-related cognitive declines and an increase in serotonin levels and anti-oxidant activity.

Hydrogen Water Has Neuro-Protective Effects

A 2014 study in PlosOne found evidence that hydrogen infused water can aid people who have suffered from traumatic brain injury by reducing some of the horrible after effects. Traumatic brain injury causes chronic problems and can be a risk factor for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Hydrogen water has been found to reduce the negative impact of such brain injury in the long term on patients.pexels-photo-89525

Hydrogen Water Prevents Muscle Fatigue

A small 2012 study in Medical Gas Research demonstrated how hydrogen water can act as an anti-oxidant and help decrease the effects of oxidative stress in athletes. Blood lactate levels, which increase in athletes when performing hard exercise, actually decreased in the subjects taking hydrogen water.

Where Can You Buy Hydrogen Water?

Right now, only a few companies sell hydrogen infused water, and at pretty steep prices. One of these is HTWO water company, which sells the water in pouches for $4 per 17 ounce pouch or $98 for a one month supply. That seems pretty expensive for water, but there isn’t much competition. You can buy HFactor Hydrogen Water on Amazon as well, which is another option.

Alternatively you can get a “hydrogen stick” on Amazon, but all of them have received mixed reviews. It’s unclear whether it only works if your tap water is of a certain Ph, and it’s fairly pricey if it doesn’t work but may be worth a try. If you have a bit of cash to spare, the Arui Ellaim Hydrogen Water Maker looks pretty cool, too.
